More and more people get their answers straight from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Those answers usually cite only a handful of sources. This guide covers the seven things that most influence whether your website is one of them.

Start here: run the free AI visibility checker to see which of these you already have in place.

1. Let AI crawlers in

If OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot are blocked, you cannot be cited by those assistants, however good your content is. Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings. Our guide to AI crawlers in robots.txt explains which ones to allow.

2. Make sure your content works without JavaScript

Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your key text, prices or FAQs only appear after scripts load, the crawler sees an empty page. Server-rendered HTML is the safe choice.

3. Tell AI exactly who you are

Add Organization schema with your name, logo, URL and official profiles such as LinkedIn. Keep your name, description and contact details consistent across your site and profiles, so AI can connect the dots.

4. Answer real questions directly

AI answers are built from clear, quotable passages. Use question-style H2 headings, answer in the first one or two sentences underneath, and then add detail. Add an FAQ section with FAQPage schema on key pages.

5. Include specific facts and numbers

Vague claims are rarely cited. Specific, verifiable facts are: prices, dates, locations, results, steps and definitions. Make sure they are accurate and up to date.

6. Build trust signals

Link to your about, contact and privacy pages. Show who wrote the content and why they are credible. Mentions and links from other reputable sites also make it more likely that AI treats you as a source worth citing.

7. Add an llms.txt file

A short llms.txt file summarises your business and points AI to your most important pages. It is quick to add and a clear signal that your site is AI-ready.

How Google AI Overviews are different

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages Google has already crawled and indexed. Classic SEO foundations still matter most here: indexable pages, a clear title and structure, helpful content and good page experience. If a page is not indexed, it cannot appear in an AI Overview.

How to measure progress

  • Re-run the AI visibility audit after each round of fixes.
  • In Google Analytics, watch the AI Assistant channel for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai.
  • Ask the assistants your customers’ real questions and note when you are mentioned or linked.

FAQs

How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?

Technical fixes such as crawler access can take effect as soon as the pages are re-crawled. Building enough authority to be cited for competitive questions takes longer, usually months.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Organic citations in ChatGPT answers are not something you can buy. The reliable route is to be accessible, clear and trustworthy.
